Sewage from homes and businesses on the Island has leaked into the River Media following a severe mechanical failure at a pumping station on the outskirts of Newport.
The Island’s largest pumping facility, located just off of Fairlee Road, suffered a severe equipment failure, which has lead to sewage entering the River Medina.
The station was taken offline for a short period of time to allow work to be carried out on a main sewer, however when switched back on, the pumps became blocked with sanitary products and failed to restart.
All three pumps are reported to have failed, however two of three are now back up and running.
A full-scale response has been launched by the Environment Agency, who are working alongside Southern Water to minimise any further pollution to the area.
An investigation is underway.
