SIX weeks after the first pipe bomb was detonated, explosive experts have successfully cleared the second and last bomb at the site of a future German supermarket next to BAE Systems, Cowes.
To protect the former airfield in the second world war, highly explosive pipe bombs were placed underground in the event of an invasion by the Germans. Now, 67 years since the end of the war, the bombs have been detonated by Ramora UK to make way for German supermarket, Aldi.
Another 200-metre exclusion zone was put in place overnight on Friday into Saturday for public safety.
The discount supermarket chain gained permission from the Isle of Wight Council’s planning committee in February 2010 to build on the land as plans were announced to build a new commercial and industrial estate on the land, which sits next to the former Plessey’s site, now BAE Systems.
