VIDEO: Around 6,000 scooter enthusiasts took to the Island’s roads this weekend to participate in the annual Isle of Wight Scooter Rally, attracting bikers from around the world.
The event, which has been running since the 1980’s, provided entertainment for all including live bands and DJ’s, clothing and accessory stalls as well as the International Scooter Custom Show, hosted at Planet Ice at Quay Road, Ryde.
Yesterday also saw the mass ride-out, where riders, some of which dressed up for the occasion, rode out of Ryde in spectacular fashion as crowds of thousands watched on, lining Ryde Esplanade for as far as the eye could see. Following a set route, taking in the sights of Bembridge and Sandown, the ride-out once again congregated at Sandown Rugby Club.
The Island seems to have fared well out of the event, as bars and tourism attractions were packed out with many scooterists as well as tourists who came for the event, and, with the weather holding off, the short glimpses of sunshine helped to make it a pleasurable weekend for all.
Following a big safety campaign from Hampshire Constabulary alongside Island Roads, motoring incidents involving scooters were at a minimum, however as Island Echo reported on Saturday, two scooterists received injuries following a collision in Shanklin.
