It has been confirmed that a new Sainsbury’s Local store will open in Union Street, Ryde subject to planning permission. It will join 3 other ‘local’ stores in Cowes, Freshwater and Sandown plus the main superstore in Newport.
The now-closed Stanley’s Bar and the neighbouring Sweet Chariot will be knocked into one to become the first supermarket on Union Street, which is set to open in Summer 2014.
A spokesperson has told Island Echo:
“We will be submitting a planning application in the next couple of weeks for a Sainsbury’s Local. This type of store is not a full size supermarket, but a convenience store, designed for people to top up their weekly shop.
“The new store would create around 20 full and part time jobs. We will be applying for an alcohol licence, and as a responsible retailer of alcohol, will operate our Think 25 policy, which helps ensure underage people are unable to buy alcohol.”
