A brand new Sainsbury’s Local store is set to open in Ryde later this month following a long period of development, transforming two buildings into one convenience store.
Joining a series of small stores in Cowes, Freshwater and Sandown and the main store in Newport, the new Union Street Sainsbury’s Local will open with a ribbon cutting ceremony on 23rd October.
The former Stanley’s Bar and Sweet Chariot sweet shop properties – half way down Union Street on the right hand side – have been knocked into one to create the town’s first Sainsbury’s.
Plans for the new store were confirmed by the supermarket giant back in December last year with hopes that the store would open in time for the Summer.
At the time a spokesperson for Sainsbury’s told Island Echo:
“The new store would create around 20 full and part time jobs. We will be applying for an alcohol licence, and as a responsible retailer of alcohol, will operate our Think 25 policy, which helps ensure underage people are unable to buy alcohol.”
