The rain cleared just in time yesterday (Saturday) for the 125th anniversary of Ryde Carnival, the oldest of its kind in the United Kingdom.
The annual procession, which moved off at a slightly earlier time of 17:30, made its way through the streets of Ryde as hundreds came out to celebrate the remarkable achievement of 125 years, with the first Ryde Carnival taking place in August 1888.
Sounds echoed throughout Ryde as the high-energy parade lifted the atmosphere, following the normal carnival route from the Esplanade, up Dover Street and back down through the High Street to the seafront.
Meridian Corps of Drums came across the Solent to bring their upbeat, fast-marching performance to Island residents, while Mas Fusion added vibrant colour and heavy bass, adding to the diversity of the parade.
Ryde, Newport, Sandown, St Helens and Cowes carnival queens all attended, while other queens made the decision to head straight to Ventnor’s illuminated procession last night.
With the dates shuffled around for 2013, Ryde Carnival Association have teamed up with Ryde Regatta to offer a weekend packed of fun, excitement and activity as live music gets underway in Appley, alongside stalls and other activities and a grand firework finale tonight at 22:00.
Unfortunately, the rain returned last night making for a wet and miserable evening at Appley Park, but in true carnival spirit, the live music continued as planned.
Ryde’s famous illuminated procession, which attracts around 30,000 people, is to be held on Saturday 31st August at 20:30.
