RELIEF FOR RYDE AS NEW ESPLANADE TOILETS FINALLY OPEN

Img 0059The new public toilets at Ryde Interchange on the Esplanade have finally opened, more than 2 years after the loos at Western Gardens were demolished.

Ryde Town Council has confirmed that the new conveniences – located on the concourse within the interchange building – are now open following the successful completion of all necessary legal paperwork. It follows a lengthy row over who would run the toilets.

It was in early 2022 that the Western Gardens toilet block was demolished as part of the wider Ryde Interchange development, which is yet to be completed. Temporary loos were brought in to allow locals and tourists alike to spend a penny but by October 2022 they were removed again due to constant vandalism.

Since then, there has been no proper solution in place – save for 2 or 3 portaloos dumped on the bus station pavement.

With just days to go until thousands of festival revellers arrive in Ryde, the doors to the permanent ladies and gents have been unlocked. However, the facilities will only be open from 06:00-19:00 daily – despite the trains, ferries and buses running much later.

It’s said that the new facilities have been designed with modern standards of hygiene, accessibility and sustainability in mind. Equipped with touchless fixtures and accessible stalls, the new toilets are aimed at providing comfort and convenience for all residents and visitors.

Lisa Dyer, Clerk at Ryde Town Council, says:

“Frustratingly, due to the complex nature of the lease arrangement, the legal work has taken some time to complete. We are really pleased to have been able to get these facilities open. With the IOW festival and summer holidays fast approaching it is vital these facilities are available for residents and visitors alike”.

The Ryde Interchange scheme is yet to be completed, with works still continuing on the new café and the final appearance of the building.

Very good news, apart from the open hours not long enough in the evenings. If a job is worth doing, it’s worth doing well, (if that’s not an unfortunate turn of phrase under the circs).
I suppose it’s thought that people out during late evenings will be able to use pub loos. But people are around during the night too.

We need a small unisex concrete block built wc with a basic stainless steel pan where desperate users can do their business out of hours, when this toilet is shut.

If you really are desperate to use a toilet then to have a cheap, vandal proof wc, with no toilet roll, or handwash, then you would be grateful just for that, and it would run alongside the new toilet, and be cheap to maintain .

Better than ‘nothing’. Buy your own tissue and hand gel, as we do when we have a cold or Covid. Less to be vandalised and keep costs down.

I totally agree with this. Great idea. Cause there’s nothing worse than needing to go after missing the ferry and bus and not being able to find somewhere.

Being that this area is railway land owned by network rail, its very strange that ivy searle hasn’t made the usual comment of tarmac it all. Its also very poor of island echo to not actually moderate comments that are put up on its website when so called comments are clearly from trolls and keyboard warriors.

And of course, you, as your obvious user name implies, are not ‘biased’ in any way to keeping the out of date railway going are you?

Thousands use the congested roads between Ryde and Shanklin alongside a railway track, which could be a far more effective private electric battery shuttle bus route, IF the track was tarmac’d over.

Also cycles, pedestrians and horses could use it far more safely than if they have to use the busy roads.

So I suggest IF freedom of speech is to be cut, it is biased self interested posters like you who ought be removed.

How do you like them apples?

About time, let’s hope these toilets are free to use, unlike
many others that charge 50p to have a pee.

Sadly the local feral scum will destroy them as they do to every attempt to improve the area.

Yet so many fools STILL donate food at food banks of which much is taken by earlier feral scum to now feed their own feral scum, despite being paid more than most people when the rent and council tax free housing is taken into account.

‘Feral’ and ‘scum’ are no way to address other local people. It’s de-humanising. You just sound like you get your rocks off from sounding like a thug yourself.
