Consultation is due to begin on plans to bring in areas in four towns which would allow police to confiscate alcohol from people if they are causing anti social behaviour.
Should the ‘designated public place orders’ – or DPPOs – come into force, they will cover large parts of Sandown, Brading, Lake and Shanklin. The DPPOs have been requested by Hampshire Constabulary.
The orders give police powers to take alcohol away from anyone who is deemed to be causing a nuisance or annoyance as a result of drinking alcohol. They are not a total ban on drinking alcohol in public areas, meaning anyone who drinks responsibly can continue to do so.
Areas included in the DPPOs are Culver Parade, the Esplanade, the High Street and Los Altos Park in Sandown and Languard Manor Road and the Esplanade in Shanklin. All beaches and slipways in the towns are also covered. In Lake, roads include The Fairway and Lake Cliff Gardens, while in Brading, the High Street, Station Road and New Road are amongst those included.
The consultation begins today (Friday) and runs until 28th February. It will be available on the council’s website iwight.com later today under the ‘Consultations’ section which is found by clicking on the ‘Your Council’ tab on the home screen.
Once the consultation is completed and the views considered, a final report will be taken to an upcoming licensing committee meeting where members will decide whether or not to impose the DPPOs.
