PERMISSION has been granted for a new restaurant in Newport’s Town Centre this week.
Council officials met yesterday lunchtime to discuss an application for Read’s Restaurant, which is planning to open in Holyrood Street, Newport this September.
A tour of the proposed site was delivered to the Isle of Wight Council’s planning committee, licencing department and environmental health department, as well as to Hampshire Constabulary, to provide detailed information to the variety of agencies to assist in their decision.
Following an informative and exciting preview of what is planned for the former volunteer hall, a meeting was held at the Council’s chambers at 13:30 to decide on the future of the building.
After a short adjournment to welcome Steve Apter, Chief Fire Officer for the Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue, to the discussion, a unanimous decision was made to approve the application by 15:00.
Permission has been granted for the sale of alcohol between the hours of 08:30 – 23:00 on weekdays and 08:30 – 00:30 weekends. A restriction has however been put in place that anyone purchasing alcoholic drinks must be eating, or must be with someone who is eating a meal at the establishment.
Project developer, Stephen Wyatt, formally of ‘French Franks’ and ‘Hardtimes’ fame said: “I am very delighted and happy to be a part of this new venture.
“I think it is great for Newport town centre that there will be another restaurant in the near future where families will be made to feel comfortable and can dine out on truly fabulous food and drink”.
One local resident, who lives in a cottage behind the 19th century building, opposed the plans, which was taken into consideration during the delegation.
