Newport Primary School has benefited from two productive days with Her Majesty’s Inspector, Ofsted, that were both supportive and challenging, according to the school’s acting headteacher, Jerry Seaward.
The school’s robust and revised action plan, together with that of the Local Authority, has now been judged fit for purpose. The school has also been deemed as making reasonable progress in its journey to the removal of special measures.
The Reverend Kevin Arkell, Chair of Governors, commented:
“The Governing Body is pleased to note the HMI’s view that the school is making reasonable progress towards the removal of special measures, this being the highest judgement available.”
Ofsted acknowledged that there is now a positive learning environment at the school, the children are happier and higher expectations of what pupils can do in lessons have resulted in better progress, particularly in Year 6 and the Early Years Foundation Stage. In addition, they reported that leaders and managers are eradicating inadequate teaching effectively and that staff are working collaboratively to share good practice and raise standards. The clarity and consistency with which senior leaders communicate expectations and key messages have contributed to this overall improvement with the deputy headteacher being noted by Ofsted inspectors as a particularly strong leader of teaching.
Speaking about the visit, Jerry Seaward, Acting Headteacher, stated:
“Whilst we are pleased at the progress so far, there is, however, much to do as we continue our drive for the sustained improvements in Teaching and Learning which will bring the school out of special measures and ensure the best possible progress and attainment for our children”
Pat Goodhead, Principal of Christ the King College and the Executive Headteacher of Newport Primary School, added:
“I am delighted that the staff’s hard work and commitment have been recognised, and I am confident that the strong partnership with parents, governors, the diocese and IoW and Hampshire officers will ensure the school will continue to move forward successfully. We look forward to the next visit when we can share further improvements.”
