One of the Island’s special schools has been rated as ‘good’ by Her Majesty’s Inspectors, Ofsted.
Medina House School in Newport, which caters for children aged 3-11, was visited by Ofsted back in April having been previously rated as ‘requiring improvement’. However, the inspectors have noted some positive improvements at the school including good achievement in English, maths and overall personal development.
The report, which has been released today, says that parents/carers are pleased with the care and support that the school provides for their children, that pupils in the early years foundation stage achieve well and quickly make friends and that the most-able pupils make excellent progress in reading because of the high-quality visual approaches used and the effective teaching of phonics.
Although the school is knocking on the door of becoming ‘outstanding’, Ofsted say that this hasn’t been achieved as sometimes pupils are required to take it in turns to complete tasks and this limits the amount of time they have to complete tasks and they become restless while waiting. In addition, in a few select lessons pupils do not make the progress they should because tasks are too easy for some and too difficult for others.
