At around 22:00 a total of 185 postcode areas ranging from PO30 1 to PO38 3 lost supply due to a currently unknown fault. At the same time households across the Island experienced a double dip in lights.
Southern and Scottish Energy say that restoration of power is due at midnight, however this is likely to be longer for some customers.
The areas affected include central and outer Newport; Carisbrooke; Brighstone; Chillerton and Rookley.
UPDATE @ 22:40 – 59 postcode areas have now seen power restored, however 126 areas remain without electricity.
UPDATE @ 22:50 – 103 postcode areas now remain without power supply including PO30 1; PO30 3; PO30 4 and PO38 3.
UPDATE @ 23:10 – SSE have restored power to a further 32 postcode areas leaving 71 without supply.
UPDATE @ 00:40 – The power cut has now been reduced down to 15 postcode areas, meaning the majority are back on the grid.
The latest SSE update says that they anticipate the power will be restored at around 04:00.
UPDATE @ 05:30 – Power has now been fully restored. The outage has been blamed on problems with overhead power cables which affected around 1,700 properties.
