Hampshire Fire and Rescue Service are encouraging those across the region – which includes the Isle of Wight – to follow the countryside fire safety code.
With Summer in full swing and the rather hot weather continuing, the risk of a fire developing is significantly higher than at other times of the year.
Islanders are expected to be making the most of the weather this weekend. Help keep our beautiful countryside free from fire by following these pointers:
• Do not discard cigarettes in the countryside; dispose of smoking materials properly and make sure they are completely extinguished
• Clear away bottles, glasses and any broken glass to avoid them magnifying the sun and starting a fire
• Always take extra care if using a barbecue
• Only light fires or barbecues in designated areas using the facilities provided
• Don’t leave campfires or barbecues unattended and extinguish them properly after you have finished using them
Just last night a large fire developed on heathland at Alver Valley Country Park near Gosport. The fire could be seen and smelt from Ryde seafront.
Remember, you can report any information about illegal fire setting activities and those responsible (anonymously) to Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
