VIDEO: Homeowners and businesses across the Island are this week continuing to clean up a trail of destruction left by the storm that battered the Island’s coastline on Friday.
Although all eyes have been drawn to the ongoing situation at Undercliff Drive, other areas of the Island have felt loss and are working to fix damaged properties and coastlines after the hurricane-force storm left beach huts ruined, cliff tops dangerous and seaside coves in tatters.
Island Echo reader Amanda Bailey captured the moment part of the cliff edge at Compton Beach collapsed, falling to the beach below, emphasising the dangers of coastal areas at current. Members of the public are advised to take extra caution around the Island’s coastline, especially in South and West Wight areas.
At Steephill Cove in Ventnor, the picturesque coastal hamlet was left in a sorry state when the strong waves crashed against the sea wall causing damage to a number of the properties on the shore, as well as bringing stones and debris onto the pathway as photographed by Eleanor Strawson.
Hotels windows were smashed by paving stones at the Albion Hotel in Freshwater and structures on the seafront at Sandown were effected by the adverse weather, captured by Jen Cook.
Further along the coast in Shanklin, an area of the Esplanade near to The Fisherman’s Cottage was smashed with barriers destroyed – photographed by Mark Kirvan – however luckily the cottage appears to have escaped any serious damage. Our featured image is also of the area, as photographed by Rob Howatt.
Back across in the West Wight, a number of beach huts have been destroyed at Totland Bay, as also photographed by Luisa Lobato.
