PICTURE GALLERY: The streets of Shanklin were lit up in more ways than one last night (Saturday) with a fantastic array of multicoloured lights and atmosphere-lifting music as the annual Shanklin Illuminated Carnival took place.
In what was a bumper turn out, thousands of spectators lined the procession route to enjoy the colourful and vibrant illuminated display, the first of the season. Thankfully the weather stayed mild throughout ahead of an incoming storm which has seen the cancellation of nearby Sandown Regatta today (Sunday).
Setting off from the Old Village at 21:15, the procession was led by the Cllr Jon Gilbey and firefighters from the town’s fire station, alongside town crier John Davies.
Queens from across the Island joined in the procession, alongside Vectis Corps of Drums, Wight Diamonds marching band and a variety of samba bands, all lit up in their individual ways.
The carnival moves to Ventnor next week for the town’s main procession, moving off at 19:00.
