On the 13th April Steven Apsey, Geology teacher and Head of Year Nine at Sandown Bay Academy, will be taking part in one of the biggest challenges of his life; running the London Marathon for Isle of Wight Charity the Ellen MacArthur Cancer Trust.
With a long road ahead of him, Mr Apsey is calling on the help of the students at Sandown Bay Academy to support him and the Trust as he works towards his grueling marathon goal.
With a fundraising committee set up amongst the Year Nine students, last Thursday saw the first of their charity events.
The day kicked off in assembly with guest speakers from the Trust explaining the impact of their work; the charity gives young people in recovery from cancer the chance to rebuild their confidence through sailing.
The students then took part in a number of fundraising games, including donut eating and the no hands cream cake challenge. Throughout the day, Mr Apsey changed his outfit depending on how much money had been raised, the outfits throughout the day included shorts and T-shirt, a oneise and finally a dress. Needless to say, by lunch time the target of £300 had been reached and Mr Apsey spent the rest of the day wearing a dress and make-up.
With a grand total of £395 raised, Mr Apsey is thrilled with the support he has received:
“The young people’s support is invaluable, both in helping me to raise money for the Trust and in motivating me to get out and train!
“Giving young people who have been through tough times with cancer the opportunity to forget their worries, build their confidence and be challenged is an incredibly worthwhile experience.”
In the past 10 years the Trust has grown beyond every expectation into a national charity. Working with every young person’s primary cancer care unit in the UK, taking young people aged between 8-24 who are recovering from cancer on four-day sailing trips.
The next fundraising challenge for the students at Sandown Bay Academy will be a Dance-a-thon on the 21st-22nd March when students will be sponsored to spend 24 hours dancing at school.
