A team of firefighters from the Isle of Wight are today (Friday) in London, where they will find out if they have been crowned ‘Team of the Year’ in the Spirit of Fire Awards 2014.
Blue watch from Newport Fire Station, led by Watch Manager Martin Poynter, have been nominated to receive a prestigious award for the work they have done to help fundraise for and raise the profile of The Firefighters Charity – an organisation that is a provider of services that enhance quality of life for serving and retired fire service personnel and their families.
The watch, who provide fire cover for the Island for two days and two nights a week, are said to go that extra mile to raise the profile of the charity both within the Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service and across the community.
Combining with other local charities and partners for joint events has widened the charity’s profile and pooled resources and Blue Watch have been key to developing this with events like the Driver Challenge, supporting Walk the Wight and this year’s ‘Blue Light Fight Night’. A number of car washes are also held outside the station in South Street throughout the year.
The nominees, family and friends will gather at a special celebratory Downing Street reception this lunchtime, before heading to the Park Plaza in Westminster later tonight where the winners will be announced.
