20130327-134954.jpgFire crews from Ryde and Shanklin have this afternoon been tackling a fire at a public toilet in Sandown.

A fire in the gentleman’s section of the building at Pier Street, opposite Sandown Pier, led to the emergency call out shortly before 13:00.

Firefighters using breathing apparatus tackled the blaze, which has caused damage to the convenience.

One pumping appliance remains on the scene.

Police are investigating the incident.

UPDATE @ 14:05: Scenes of crime officers have now arrived on the scene, indicating that Police are treating the fire as suspicious.

UPDATE @ 15:20 – The Isle of Wight Council have closed the toilets due to fire damage
