A price war has erupted in Newport this week with two discount stores battling it out to encourage shoppers through the door.
Poundland, which has been established in Newport High Street for a number of years, has dropped its product prices from a round pound to 97p as they go up against competition from the recently opened 99p Stores. Since the opening of the Island’s first 99p Stores shop, Poundland has been noticeably quieter.
Yesterday (Thursday), prices were dropped to attract new and former shoppers to Poundland, which was opened by Coronation Street star Anthony Cotton back in 2009. In reaction, 99p stores have today matched the price drop, dropping their products by tuppence to 97p also.
Competition between the two stores was expected when Island Echo exclusively revealed the news that a second discount chain would open in Newport, just metres from each other.
99p stores said on Saturday’s opening day that they have double the range, with a penny change.
