Amazingly, no persons were injured in the incident, which occurred in Avenue Road at around 13:20.

Island Echo’s Newport region reporter, Daniel Poole captured this photograph showing the damage sustained to the Southern Vectis double-decker as it returned to the firm’s depot in Nelson Street.

Stag Lane Motors recovered the vehicle after stopping a major fuel leak after the fire ripped through the engine bay.

A spokesperson for Southern Vectis praised the quick thinking of the bus driver and the safe evacuation of the vehicle.

Fire crews from Sandown and Shanklin remained on the scene for around 1 hour. The road reopened a short while after.
