A drunk and confused man came within inches of near certain death when he laid down in the middle of an unlit country lane with a local bus just minutes away – and the quick-thinking actions of the bus driver undoubtedly saved the life of the drunk man…and the lucky man probably doesn’t even know it.
That is the story behind an incredible near-miss incident which happened on Saturday 5th October at 03:05 in the morning. A Route 7 Southern Vectis bus was traveling on Hallets Shute near Freshwater as normal when the bus driver spotted something in the road. Slamming on the brakes, the bus stopped just inches from an unknown man who was laying on the carriageway.
It was later discovered the gentleman was intoxicated.
This video is being used by Hampshire Constabulary to encourage safer behaviour, especially at a time when more people consume alcohol as Islanders welcome in 2014.
Sgt Dave Sanderson of the Isle of Wight Roads Policing Unit has said:
“The video shows the extraordinary danger the man put himself in. More significantly the danger he put everyone else in.
“Imagine the devastating impact this incident could have had on others if it were not for the amazing reactions of the bus driver.
“We have released the video with the kind permission of Southern Vectis to encourage safer behaviour. Whether a pedestrian or road user, please keep yourself safe on the roads, because sometime you need to expect the unexpected.”
A Southern Vectis spokesman added:
“The driver’s quick thinking actions saved this guy’s life, but just a second or two later could have been a different story. Please keep yourself and others safe when enjoying a night out.”
