Detectives on the Isle of Wight are today investigating two assaults that happened within minutes of each other in Lugley Street, Newport last night (Friday).
Shortly after 23:00, a 26-year-old man was attacked after being followed by three men who punched him in the face, knocking him to the ground. The trio continued their assault before stealing his wallet and making off.
Just minutes before the callous and unprovoked attack, a 17-year-old male was also assaulted – it is believed by the same three men. Thankfully, despite being punched in the face, the teenager managed to run away from the scene.
Officers from Newport CID are now appealing for witnesses to come forward with any information they may have about the double assault.
Detective Constable Peter Russell of Newport CID said:
“We believe both these attacks were carried out by the same group of men and happened within minutes of each other.
“We have already spoken to a number of people but are keen to hear from anyone who may have been in the area last night and saw or heard anything that can help us with our investigation.”
Anyone with information is asked to contact DC Russell at Newport Police Station by calling 101. Information can also be given anonymously to Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
Police are reminding people to be vigilant when out walking and be aware of their surroundings.
