UPDATED: DAWN TELEGRAPH POLE CRASH CLOSES NEWPORT’S STAPLERS ROAD

A road traffic collision that occurred at daybreak this morning (Wednesday) – in which a vehicle collided with a telegraph pole – has led to the closure of Staplers Road on the outskirts of Newport.

Emergency services were called to the scene between the gyratory and Landscape Lane at around 04:30 this morning.

Island Echo understands a car crashed into a pole located at the junction with Heathfield Close. The utility pole carries electrical supply cables instead of telephone communications.

Hard road closures have been put in place as a result of the collision, which has brought cables down into the carriageway and has left the pole at a precarious angle.

Scottish and Southern Electricity Network engineers are on site to begin carrying out emergency repairs. Supply has been lost to around 6 postcodes in the area.

All traffic is being diverted via Long Lane until further notice.

Southern Vectis Route 9 buses via Staplers are diverting via Long Lane and Briddlesford Road in both directions.

UPDATE – The male driver of the vehicle has escaped any serious injury. It’s said he passed out at the wheel.

UPDATE @ 18:20 – Staplers Road has now re-opened in both directions, however, temporary traffic lights are in operation.

Well done Island Roads for not putting signs at the roundabout at the Woodmans arms, nor at the end of Blacklands Lane. Utter chaos this morning with commuters only finding out they cant get to staplers when they are at staplers. Completely inept company!!!

So, not a “telegraph pole” at all. And a supply to 6 postcodes was presumably 11kV so why was it on a wooden pole?

it’s always unwise to ‘presume’ things….

Given that the telegraph has been utterly defunct for many years, it would be wise to refer to these poles as “utility poles” like most people do.

Tories removed the roads policing and halved the police on the island. And now for years we get a massive increase of road traffic accidents and an ever increasing death toll on our roads. Welcome to tory Brittan where your fake tax cuts are paid with the blood of the people.

Car crashes into telegraph pole. Tories to blame.

It’s like a broken record, the same thing over and over again. Laughable, but a bit sad too.
