A section of the Hanover Point car park at Compton in the West Wight has further collapsed following the recent adverse weather.
The car park off of Military Road has been deteriorating for a number of years with parking spaces being lost to the elements, however one of the largest falls in recent times has taken a large section of the hard-standing area down the cliff side to the sea below.
The news comes as planning permission is requested by the National Trust to carry out engineering works to restore and reinstate the popular car park used by tourists, walkers and surfers all year round.
The plans are to restore the car park following recent cliff erosion and to reinstate an area approx 20x43m with new materials to provide all year round car parking. If planning permission is granted, it will mean an extra 5 parking spaces and will allow continuing access to the viewpoint.
