A 150-year-old church bier has been badly damaged by fire after a suspected arson attack.
The Victorian era bier, which is designed to help carry coffins during burials, was located in a garden shed within the grounds of All Saint’s Church, Freshwater before it was burnt to the ground last Wednesday.
Firefighters from Newport Fire Station were called to the scene at approximately 01:00 where they discovered the burning shed.
It is now believed that the incident was an arson attack.
Investigating officee PC John Davis of the Isle of Wight’s Targeted Patrol Team described the incident as an “act of mindless vandalism”.
