To coincide with the opening of the Isle of Wight Autumn Walking Weekend, the New Carnival Company will be launching an App which celebrates the rich carnival heritage of the Island this coming weekend.
Entitled the Isle of Wight Carnival Trail Companion, the App is designed to animate a 100 mile walking route around the Island that links all the carnival towns and villages, including St Helens, Sandown, Shanklin, Ventnor, Freshwater and Totland, Yarmouth, Newport, Cowes and Ryde.
The Carnival Trail was inaugurated as a new route by the New Carnival Company in May earlier this year in association with walking artist Ali Pretty. They enlisted the expertise of digital artists Richard White and Adam Jansch to produce the App which allows users to interact with a range of music, sounds and memories from each local carnival in the form of digital soundscapes as they walk through the towns.
Local carnival associations have contributed archive materials to support the production of the App and Richard White collected many sound bites from local carnival folk during the inaugural walk.
To celebrate the launch of the Carnival Trail Companion, New Carnival Company’s Chris Slann and Frankie Goldspink and artist Ali Pretty will be hosting a demonstration walk this Sunday 26th October. Walkers are welcome to join them at 12:30 from Culver Down through the towns of Sandown and Shanklin and finishing in Ventnor at 16:30. This 9 mile route can be walked in full or in part from one carnival town to another. Bring your smartphone or tablet.
NCC Executive Director Chris Slann said:
“We have chosen to walk this leg of the Carnival Trail as it allows us to demonstrate the App in three different places with three unique soundscapes.
“This project has brought together the Isle of Wight Carnival tradition, healthy living agendas and both visual and digital artists. The result will provide a lasting legacy of Island Carnivals that can be accessed via smartphone or tablet whilst enjoying the wonderful scenery we have here”.
The Carnival Trail Companion App will be free to download from the AppStore from today for anyone wishing to enjoy it as part of the Walking Weekend. A fully compatible ‘armchair’ version is also available for audiences world-wide. The App is designed to be used with Viewranger interactive maps of the route available on the website at www.thenewcarnivalcompany.com.
