sandownilluminatedcarnival2014_008400PICTURE GALLERY: Sprites weren’t dampened despite a heavy downpour of rain at last night’s Sandown Illuminated Carnival, which saw a bumper turnout of spectators for the final carnival of the summer season at the seaside town.

Thousands upon thousands lined the procession route through the streets of Sandown to enjoy the illuminated display, which unfortunately became a rather wet one after the heavens opened with anticipated rain, which began shortly after the carnival set off from Culver Parade.

sandownilluminatedcarnival2014_006Local firefighters led the carnival – with town crier John Davies – which also featured Medina Marching Band, Vectis Corps of Drums, Mas Fusion, Raw Samba and the Wight Diamonds Marching Band.

Queens from across the Island turned out for the popular event, but with brollies raised although smiles remained as the bright lights reflected off the wet road surface.

sandownilluminatedcarnival2014_010To the praise of organisers, the planned fireworks shot into the sky at Eastern Gardens following the conclusion of the annual carnival despite the torrential conditions.

The final carnival of the season takes place on Saturday evening as Ryde’s Illuminated Carnival sets off from the Esplanade at 20:15.

Ryde’s Children’s Carnival takes place on Friday at 14:45.
