UPDATED: Her Majesty’s Inspectors, Ofsted, visited Carisbrooke College last month and are reporting back some positive improvements at the school, according to a report released today (Thursday).
Ofsted have found that the college is making reasonable progress towards moving out of special measures, which were imposed back in April 2013. Significant improvements have been noted, with it being said that the school now has more outstanding and good teaching.
Compared to a year ago, students across the entire school are making better progress and the gap between the attainment of students eligible for free school meals and other students is narrowing. Behaviour has also improved.
Carisbrooke College’s new headteacher, Peter Shaw, has received much praise in the monitoring report, which was released today. Inspectors have said that Mr Shaw provides considerable drive and direction for the school and that he is rightly respected by staff and students for what he has achieved, for his commitment to the school and for his positive approach. When groups of students were asked what the best thing about the school was, the report says a number replied ‘the headteacher’.
The school are now permitted to appoint newly-qualified teachers (NQTs).
UPDATE @ 12:25 – Welcoming the news of improvement at Carisbrooke College, Cllr Chris Whitehouse (Newport West) has said:
“Yet again the Senior Leadership Team at Carisbrooke College is driving forward improvement. I am delighted by the news that they are making reasonable progress, though like all concerned I am impatient for further change. Clearly the Headteacher, Peter Shaw, is highly regarded by the students and is giving strong leadership. Well done to him and to all who are so clearly putting their shoulder to the wheel!”.
