Help to kick start this ambitious vision will come from players of People’s Postcode Lottery who are supporting the Trust with £100,000 of funding. This will be the first step for the charity as they endeavor to increase the number of young people sailing with the Trust from 353 in 2013 – 6.1% of all young people in the UK in recovery from cancer – to 780 in 2016 (14.2%). This funding marks the start of long-term support from players of People’s Postcode Lottery and will see the Trust receive an amazing £1 million over the next ten years.
Dame Ellen MacArthur explains the importance of the growth of the Trust:
“Thanks to the amazing team at the Cancer Trust, our first decade has been quite extraordinary. Through developing long term relationships with the young people we have worked with, some from as many as 10 years ago, we see incredible young people return to our trips. They are great role models, and not only inspire me personally, but they are a huge inspiration to the hundreds of young people we work with for the first time each year. We see repeatedly that the activities we offer and the opportunities we have developed significantly help young people rebuild their confidence during their recovery from cancer, and are delighted that our new plans will help a much greater number moving forwards.”
Launched in 2003 the aim of the Ellen MacArthur Cancer Trust is to give young people in recovery from cancer the chance to rebuild their confidence through sailing. Celebrating their 10 year anniversary, the Trust has grown beyond every expectation into a national charity and works with every young person’s primary cancer care unit in the UK, taking young people aged between 8-24 who are in recovery from cancer, sailing.
In order to achieve the impressive target of doubling the number of young people they work with over the next three years, the Ellen MacArthur Cancer Trust will need more support than ever before. Having the support of players of People’s Postcode Lottery, comprising of a shared vision along with the substantial support of £100,000, is significant for the Trust’s confidence as they embark on a three-year mission to achieve the long term goal.
Head of Charities at People’s Postcode Lottery Clara Govier said:
“As a charity lottery we are delighted that over the next ten years our players will commit £1 million to such a fantastic cause like the Ellen MacArthur Cancer Trust. This will ultimately enable the charity to continue in its growth and increase the number of young people who are able to use the service.”
Other fundamental aspects of the Trust’s plan include enhancing relationships with partnership organisations and UK oncology units, which will ensure that the Trust keeps working with the young people who are most in need of regaining strength and confidence. The Trust will also be working hard to secure additional funding in order to increase their total annual contributions received from £477,000 in 2012 to £905,000 in 2016. Investing in staff and volunteers will all help towards getting more young people in recovery from cancer out on the water.
