BUSINESSES in Sandown have backed plans to close the main High Street once a week during the school holidays.

Around 25 businesses have said they support plans to close the High Street between Albert Road and Pier Street once a week to allow for outside seating and live entertainment to be held, without traffic.

The idea was put forward by the Sandown Business Association to attract more visitors to the town, which boasts a variety of restaurants, cafes and bars as well as traditional seaside activities.

Initial plans suggest closing the road on a Wednesday evening for approximately 4 hours from 18:00 during the 6 week summer school holiday period. Should this be successful, a second day would be added during 2013.
