BODY FOUND IN MISSING PERSON SEARCH

hampshireconstabularycrestUPDATED: Police have found the body of a man who went missing from his home in Newport on Sunday.

Virgil Balmer, 54, was last seen at around 09:30 on Sunday morning when he left his home in Scarrotts Lane, Newport to catch a bus to Ventnor. Later in the morning a member of the public spotted him getting off a Southern Vectis bus in Godshill.

Serious concerns were expressed for Mr Balmer’s welfare, with an appeal launched by Police on Monday. A search followed with the National Police Air Support helicopter conducting a sweep over the area during the early hours of Monday and again on Tuesday afternoon.

Sadly, Mr Balmer’s body was found in the Ventnor area this afternoon, it has been confirmed.

WightSAR, the Island’s volunteer search and rescue team, were deployed to assist Hampshire Constabulary in their search.

UPDATED: Hampshire Constabulary have confirmed that at around 13:30 today the body of a man was found by a member of the public at Luccombe Chine.

The death is not being treated as suspicious. While formal identification is yet to be made, Mr Balmer’s family has been notified.
