BENEFIT cheats on the Island have conned almost £400,000 from the Isle of Wight Council during the last financial year, it has been revealed.

The Benefit Fraud Team received over 550 tip-offs during 2011-2012, which has resulted in 350 formal investigations. A total of 47 people have been ordered to pay over £20,000 after being caught out by the system.

The total sum of £389,000 has been made in overpayments to the benefit fraudsters.

Compared to 2010-11, there has been a drop in the number of fraudulent claims, when 645 referrals were made, 345 investigations carried out and £464,692 made in overpayments.
