The RNLI’s Cowes station has welcomed a walker who has set himself the extraordinary task of visiting all the charity’s stations around the coast of Britain.
24-year-old Alexander Ellis-Roswell began his fund-raising foot-slog at Margate, and the brief stop-off at Cowes meant that he had already visited 20 lifeboat stations and covered some 400 miles. He estimates that he will have to walk a total of 6,500 miles and visit nearly 200 stations to complete his task, and reckons it could well take two years.
Alex says:
“My first target is to at least reach St Ives, Cornwall, by Christmas. I could get there sooner, but I am not in a hurry.”
The heavy rucksack he carries on his back ensures that unless some well-wisher provides accommodation he is fully equipped to camp out each night.
Alexander explained he was able to afford to go walk-about in this way after saving money from an advertising business he ran in Canterbury.
After posing for a photograph next to the Cowes station’s Atlantic 85, Sheena Louise, Alexander was off again – first stop the RNLI’s Inshore Lifeboat Centre at East Cowes and then on to Bembridge Lifeboat Station, having already stopped off at the Yarmouth station.
