6 WEEKS UNTIL POLLING DAY – GENERAL ELECTION TO BE HELD ON 4TH JULY

Generalelection2024 CopyA General Election has been called, meaning in just 6 weeks’ time Islanders will head to the polls to vote for a Member of Parliament for both Isle of Wight East and Isle of Wight West.

Prime Minister Rishi Sunak has this afternoon (Wednesday) confirmed that a General Election has been called for Thursday 4th July, meaning the countdown is now on for polling day – for what is expected to be a closely fought battle with the potential for a high turnout.

For the first time, the Isle of Wight constituency has been split in half owing to changes by the Boundary Commission in a bid to even out constituencies across the country.

Over the coming weeks, candidates will be hitting the streets – and reaching out through Island Echo no doubt – to gain your vote during what is expected to be an intensive period of campaigning.

To date, the following individuals have indicated they will be standing as a candidate in the next General Election:

Isle of Wight East

  • Sarah Morris – Reform UK
  • Joe Robertson – Conservative Party
  • Emily Brothers – Labour Party
  • Michael Lilley – Liberal Democrat
  • Vix Lowthion – The Green Party

Isle of Wight West

  • Ian Pickering – Reform UK
  • Bob Seely – Conservative Party
  • Richard Quigley – Labour Party
  • Nick Stuart – Liberal Democrats
  • Cameron Palin – The Green Party

In the coming weeks Island Echo will be bringing you interviews with all the candidates (should they wish), as well as key information on polling day itself, both here and through the sister site www.isleofwight.vote.

Island Echo will also be live at the count – which will be held overnight into the early hours of Friday 5th July – to bring you all the latest news, reaction and of course the big results as they happen.

You know we currently have the highest rates of personal taxation since WW2, right?

At least Labour would spend it on things like the NHS and Police instead of trousering it for themselves and divvying it up to their millionaire chums.

The Big Cons have made a huge mess of this country for 14 years and you say the economy “is just starting to improve”??

Even were that true, (it isnt), what the heck kept them? You want another 14 years so they can ‘just start to improve’ again? Not much to look forward to is it!

Upton Spark – Starmer was a very successful QC and was head of the Crown Prosecution Service. He was brought up in a working class family, and his mother had a serious physical disability. He has a huge amount of relevant experience. Above all, he is a very decent man with sound values and empathy.

Who in the Cons can you say any of that about?

Reform, unless you wish the British to become the minority race within a few generations, and your children to fear rape, shootings, and knives as inner cities currently do.

With the Police now being told to not arrest so many, because our jails are full of third world immigrants, (which they DARE not say, but know) things will grow ever worse here.

Labour will bankrupt the country, will give amnesty to all the illegals, and do nothing to prevent the rest of Africa filling this land, and, as they breed faster than we can take them, then this will never end.

Upton Spark – I take it you’re talking about fellow human beings? With family values, caring for others and with decent goals in life? Just as much as in your (apparently) strictly filtered life. Take those blinkers off and show us how nice you can be.

Proud Overner

You haven’t obviously been to London recently. As a Londoner I can tell you that the family values that you seem to think still exist, don’t. If you were to visit Chiswick in West London for instance which was once a very nice town you will find that the shops have locked doors and shutters to stop the get in and grab mobs who are not indigenous to the UK. These crimes are being done mostly by the so called refugees from countries such as Eritrea and Albania. They don’t care about others as they carry machetes and the like in order to threaten others. So please free yourself from your islander bubble and visit the London areas to educate your do-gooder attitude which is very outdated,

Overners don’t migrate to the IOW as they have every right to live anywhere they like in the UK. After all the island is just another UK county. All be it a very poor one. Reading your comment it would appear that you are the bigot.

Sadly none of them are any good, all have the same
World Economic Forum boss.

Labour in London and Wales have introduced 20mph rules
London also have a congestion charge and ULEZ charge

Labour will be the worst thing that can happen.

INDEPENDENT is the only way to go.

Personally I will not be voting for any of them, the last few years have shown me
that they do not care for the people of the country.

About time !! I do hope the Islanders remember the Tory government failures and if you can recall any positives then good luck. We have a chance to show the conservatives they have failed Great Britain, and they are not worthy of being in Government, the Island MP has failed the island as well. Let’s stop the rot .
It’s difficult to trust any party .. but the conservative government have not delivered .. and wander from scandal to scandal .. enough is enough .

Before the General Election 2019, Bob Seely said vote for me and I will get a regulator for the rip-off ferries.
After a nice nap for five years, Bob Seely has lifted his head again and said vote for me and I will get a regulator for the rip-off ferries. Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice, shame on me.
A vote for Bob Seely is proof you are an idiot because he does nothing.
Wake up and vote Labour – the only party who actually care about working people.
Cast your mind back to the last Labour government and realise that you never had it so good. They were good times and all the Tories do is make us miserable.

I think if you are happy to live in a world that has been created by both previous labour and conservative governments and think either of them have done a good job you need a doctor to check you over. Nobody knows what the smaller parties could do given the chance because they have never had the chance, our voting system made sure of that. The reality is you are only ever going to get one of two crap parties and neither of them give a shite about you, if you think they do you are the fool.
