Wightlink Ferries hosted a successful screening of the movie Transformers: Dark of the Moon at the end of Ryde Pier on Saturday to remember Islander Joe Ellis who lost his battle against cancer last week.
The event raised £1,000 for Joe’s charitable trust – the sum included money raised through a collection and pier/parking charges, a donation from the Big Kahuna seafront kiosk for popcorn and candy floss sales and a further contribution from Wightlink.
Joe’s friends and family, who had been raising money for a pioneering treatment for the 13-year-old, are continuing with their campaign to raise £100,000 to help another family in the same situation in the future; they have already collected more than £75,000.
A total of 780 people applied online for the 200 free tickets for the showing.
Wightlink’s Media Relations Manager, Chris Cowley said:
“We went ahead with the screening to highlight the release of the latest in the film series Transformers: Age of Extinction but also to help make as much money as we could for Joe’s trust.
“As Part of Island Life, we were pleased to bring people together for this very good cause.”
The Transformer autobot Bumblebee, a black and yellow Chevrolet Camero 6.2 litre V8, delighted the audience by making a guest appearance on the Pier.
The pop up cinema was provided by David Coultas from The Extraordinary Travelling Film Show and supported by Speedy Hire (fencing) and Coast and Country (chairs).
