cricketstumpToby Corbin hit a maiden British Gas Southern League Premier Division half century for Ventnor Cricket Club at the weekend, but his efforts were not enough to prevent a 5 wicket defeat against St Cross Symondians at Newclose.

The teenager’s fine knock of 65 helped his side recover from 60-6 to reach 173 all out, but despite a couple of early breakthroughs for the hosts, the visitors went on to win with plenty of overs to spare.

15-year-old off spinner Dan Cox returned a Premier League best 2-30 from an excellent 8 over stint.

Chasing a total of a 165, Ventnor’s second team clinched a fine win at Old Tauntonians & Romsey II on Saturday in Hampshire League Division 1.

The returning David Beven made an immediate impact, taking 4-31 in tight ten over spell of leg spin, and with Hugh Calloway and Ben Attrill chipping in with two wickets apiece the home team were dismissed for 164.

Pierre Kriel led the Ventnor response with a key innings of 57 but it was a partnership of 32 for the ninth wicket which proved decisive, skipper Martin Blackman (21not out) and teenager Harry Ridley (8 not out) seeing their side home.

An impressive boundary strewn innings of 123 from captain Mark Price and from 60 Mark Fletcher led Ventnor’s third team to 300-4 and a thumping 228 run win over Waterlooville III at Steephill in Hampshire League Regional Division 3 South on Saturday.

The visitors could only manage 72 in reply to give Ventnor maximum points and retain fourth place in the table.
