SEAGULL IN DISTRESS CLOSES NEWPORT ROAD

UPDATED: The Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service have closed a main road in Newport this afternoon (Thursday) to rescue a seagull in distress.

Firefighters have scaled a 135 ladder to reach the roof of clothing store ‘Next’, where the bird is currently located.

The RSPCA summoned the assistance of fire crews earlier this afternoon.

Upper St James’ Street is currently closed from its junction with South Street. Motorists can divert via Orchard Street.

A cordon is in place around the scene.

UPDATE – The bird has been rescued by firefighters and is now in the care of the RSPCA.

Upper St James’ Street has re-opened to traffic and pedestrians.
