UPDATED: The National Police Air Service helicopter is conducting a search in the skies above Cowes this morning (Tuesday).  

Police officers on the ground, including a dog support unit, have descended on the coastal town with backup from above following what is thought to be a burglary.

It is reported to Island Echo that multiple units are sweeping the town whilst the helicopter circles above. The air support from Bournemouth arrived in Cowes at just before 00:15.

UPDATE @ 07:35 – It has been confirmed that the search was being carried out to locate suspects wanted in connection with a break in and burglary at the popular Cameo of Cowes shop on Bath Road.

The shop’s owners are said to have been awoken by the sound of smashing glass and raised voices at around midnight. A number of watches have been stolen, as well as an iPhone 5s.

In a statement issued on their Facebook page this morning, Cameo of Cowes have said:

“The shop will be closed today as we had a burglary last night and the shop has been left in a mess, which we need to sort out. Please bear with us”.

It is currently unknown if any arrests have been made.

UPDATE @ 14:00 – A spokesperson for Hampshire Constabulary has confirmed that no arrests have yet been made.

“A number of items were stolen including iPhones and designer watches. A till was also stolen, which contained cash.

“No arrests have been made at this stage and investigations are ongoing. Anyone with information is asked to contact us on 101, quoting 44170134650.”
