An inquest into the death of 53-year-old David Shayler, who died following a fall on a construction site in Newport, has been opened and adjourned this afternoon (Tuesday).

As previously reported by Island Echo, emergency services were called to the site of the former Atkinson House, Atkinson Drive on 13th October last year. It is there that firefighters assisted paramedics in moving Mr Shayler, before he was then rushed to St Mary’s Hospital by ambulance and later to Southampton General Hospital by air ambulance.

This afternoon’s inquest heard how Mr Shayler, a bricklayer of High Street, Ryde, suffered an unwitnessed fall from a first floor exterior area resulting in a severe head injury. He died in hospital 6 days later.

A post mortem carried out has confirmed David Shayler died as a result of a craniocervical injury.

The Heath and Safety Executive (HSE) are working with Hampshire Constabulary to carry out a full investigation into the tragic event.

Caroline Sumeray, senior coroner for the Isle of Wight has adjourned the inquest until 11th July 2017.
