BRITTEN-NORMAN INVESTS IN THE FUTURE

brittennormanIsle of Wight based aircraft manufacturer, Britten-Norman, has committed to a series of work place initiatives aimed at continuing to strengthen work benefits and to investing in its future.

Key amongst Britten-Norman’s plans is its commitment to expanding its apprentice and training base, which it has signalled by joining major employers in signing up to membership of ‘The 5% Club’.

In joining The 5% Club the company is supporting the momentum behind its recruitment of apprentices and graduates into the workforce, a scheme which it started a decade ago. By committing to a minimum of 5% of its UK headcount being engaged in a formalised apprentice scheme, a graduate scheme or is a sponsored student, the company seeks to continue to grow its manufacturing and aircraft maintenance teams.

The 5% Club is targeted at companies that want to transform the fortunes of young, talented people in the UK and ensure the UK retains its reputation for innovation. Being the UK’s sole fixed wing aircraft manufacturer, Britten-Norman can offer apprentices and trainees a unique experience of the aircraft design and technical operations sectors.

In addition to its initiative with The 5% Club, Britten-Norman is also committing to the Living Wage. Whilst the majority of its employees are employed in high tech roles that command salaries well above national average, the company also wishes to ensure that all of its permanent, directly employed staff are, at a minimum, paid the current UK Living Wage (£7.85). This commitment will also apply to any temporary agency staff that the company takes on. Paying the living wage is recognised as a sign of good practice in employment and considered to be the best way to drive poverty out of the UK labour market.

Chief Executive of Britten-Norman, William Hynett, said:

In 2015, Britten-Norman will be celebrating the 50th anniversary of the iconic Islander aircraft. A number of events are planned to celebrate the anniversary – the aircraft will also in the forthcoming James Bond film.
