UPDATED: Lynnbottom Tip at Downend has been closed to the public due to a ‘minor incident’.

It is currently unclear what has forced the temporary closure of the household waste and recycling centre.

The Isle of Wight Council says that the centre on Briddlesford Road will remain closed for today, with the nearest alternative being Afton HWRC at Freshwater.

UPDATE – Lynnbottom has now reopened to the public.

No further information has been disclosed.

UPDATE MONDAY: A spokesperson for the Isle of Wight Council has told Island Echo:

“Following the outbreak of a small fire, which was fully contained within a single skip, the Fire Service attended, extinguished and made safe the area very quickly.

“Lynnbottom HWRC was closed to the public for around half an hour while the minor incident was managed.  The site was cleared of users and staff efficiently following site protocols. The origin of the fire is under investigation”.
