UPDATED: The Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service, Police and the Isle of Wight Ambulance Service are all in attendance at a crash between Wootton and Newport this morning (Friday), where it is feared 1 person is trapped inside their vehicle.
Fire crews from Newport and East Cowes are working alongside paramedics to free the occupant of the car, which has left the carriageway and gone into a ditch opposite Butterfly World.
The incident occurred at just before 08:40.
Whiterails Road has been closed in both directions. Motorists should divert via Blacklands Lane or Fairlee Road.
As a result of the closure, all Southern Vectis Route 9 buses will divert via Briddlesford Road and Long Lane until further notice.
UPDATE @ 09:25 – A woman has been successfully extricated from her vehicle – a Mini – by the Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service.
She is being conveyed to St Mary’s Hospital by ambulance as a precautionary measure. She is not thought to have sustained any serious or life-threatening injuries.
Island Roads have put a hard road closure in place at the request of Police.
UPDATE @ 09:50 – Emergency services have now stood down from the incident, although Police remain on scene as recovery of the car by Bartletts Service Station takes place.
Island Echo understands a silver Mitsubishi 4×4 collided into the rear of the Mini, which was indicating right, shunting the vehicle forward and into the ditch.
A large oil spill means the road will remain closed until Island Roads have laid down spill kits and cleaned the carriageway.
UPDATE @ 11:45 – Whiterails Road has now reopened in both directions.
Southern Vectis buses have resumed a normal route.
