Islanders are being encouraged to tune in to BBC2 tomorrow (Thursday 4th January) at 18:30 to see the Isle of Wight Steam Railway featured on Michael Portillo’s Great British Railway Journeys.
In this series Michael Portillo embarks on a railway journey through Edwardian Britain. In Thursday’s episode Michael continues his journey through Chichester to Southsea before crossing the Solent with a ticket to Ryde. Boarding Island Line and travelling along Ryde Pier he then changes at Smallbrook Junction for the Isle of Wight Steam Railway.
Continuing his journey aboard a vintage steam train, Michael arrives at Wootton station, a perfectly restored Edwardian turn-of-the-century station. His final destination on the Island is Osborne House, where the future King Edward VII spent much of his childhood.
It’s an episode not too be missed by any one who loves trains, history or the Isle of Wight.
