MAN ON ROOF CLOSES NEWPORT TOWN CENTRE

UPDATED: A man has taken a position on the roof of a building in St James’ Street, Newport tonight (Monday), prompting the closure of Newport Town Centre.

A cordon has been erected surrounding Starbucks at the junction of South Street and at the junction Pyle Street as Police negotiate with the individual.

The Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service have an aerial ladder platform and appliance in attendance. The Isle of Wight Ambulance Service is also on scene.

Southern Vectis Route 1 buses are currently on diversions via Coppins Bridge and Hunnycross way. Buses will not serve Town Gate bus stop (Cowes bound) & RT7 buses will not serve Drill Hall Road bus stop.

UPDATE @ 22:40 – The male has been successfully talked down from the roof top and emergency services have now left the scene.

The road has now reopened to traffic and Southern Vectis buses have returned to the normal line of route.
