A 30-year-old man has died following a crash on Military Road near Atherfield last night (Friday).

Emergency services were called to the scene between Chale and Brighstone at around 23:00 following reports of a car overturning.

After searching the local area for the vehicle, Police eventually located a Daewoo Tacuma on its roof in a field around 100m off the carriageway.

Sadly, despite the best efforts of medical teams, the life of the 30-year-old male could not be saved and he was pronounced dead at the scene.

A 33-year-old man and a 25-year-old woman were also in the vehicle at the time of the crash but they have both escaped with minor injuries. They were taken to St Mary’s Hospital, Newport.

It is currently unclear how the incident occurred on a straight piece of road. No other vehicles were involved.

Sources say that the small hatchback vehicle had only been bought by the driver hours before last night’s fatal crash, although this is unconfirmed at this stage.

A hard road closure was put in place overnight as investigations were carried out, with the road re-opening by 05:00 this morning.

The victim’s next of kin have been informed and formal identification procedures are still on-going at this time.

Anyone who witnessed the collision, or the moments immediately before the incident, is asked to contact police on 101, quoting 44170320574.
