UPDATED: Sandown & Shanklin Independent Lifeboat and Ventnor Coastguard Rescue Team have been tasked to the area of Luccombe near Shanklin this afternoon (Friday).

The independent lifeboat is currently searching off the base of the cliffs between Shanklin and Ventnor, with Coastguard Rescue Officers situated on the cliff tops.

It is currently unclear what has prompted the alert although the area is known to be popular with explorers.

UPDATE @ 16:51 – The Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA) has confirmed that resources were mobilised at around 13:50 this afternoon following concerns from a member of the public about a family who had been seen walking over rocks towards Luccombe.

It is said that 2 adults and 2 young children ventured in the direction of Luccombe Chine with an incoming tide, prompting fears they had become cut off.

A search by Ventnor Coastguard Rescue Team and Sandown & Shanklin Independent Lifeboat has so far failed to locate any persons in difficulty. However, a report has been received that a group matching the family’s description were seen arriving safely back at Shanklin beach.

HM Coastguard are working to rule out all possibilities and ensure that all persons are safe and well.

UPDATE @ 17:10 – Search and rescue assets have now stood down from the search.
