The official launch evening of Mildren Homes’ new housing development went off with a bang tonight after a ground floor flat caught fire.

Firefighters were called shortly before 21:00 to former hospital site Whitecroft following reports of a bedroom alight. Two pumping appliances from Newport attended the scene at Sandy Lane and the fire was extinguished just before 22:00.

It is currently not known what caused the fire, however a fireworks company were on site at the time of the incident.

All residents and staff were safely evacuated.
