UPDATED: Beaper Shute near Brading is blocked in both directions this morning (Friday) due to a fallen tree which has come down across the carriageway.

Motorists and buses are currently stuck on the main Ryde to Sandown road as a result of the incident.

A smaller tree has come down on a bend further up the hill and debris is scattered across the road for it’s entire length.

A squall of extremely high winds, heavy rain, thunder and lightning has pushed across the Island in the past 30 minutes, bringing the worse driving conditions seen by this reporter.

Island Roads have been informed and are sending contractors to the area.

UPDATE @ 08:59 – Passing members of the public have been able to clear the obstruction to one side of the road, opening up the northbound carriageway to traffic.

Contractors are expected to clear the fallen tree shortly.

Meanwhile in the sky, the stormy conditions have resulted in an Aurigny Air Services flight from Guernsey being hit by lightning to the South of the Island. The flight has returned to Guernsey safely.
