45

AS rain continues to fall across the Island today the Environment Agency have issued a flood alert for Monktonmead Brook in Ryde.

Heavy Rainfall over the past 4 hours has led to a rapid rise in the river’s water level, howeve water levels are now dropping thanks to an additional pump which is currently pumping excess water across the sand straight to the sea.

Members of staff from the Environment Agency are currently on site at the Monktonmead Pumping Station, which is situated on the Esplanade.

UPDATE @ 13.30: A spokesman for the Environment Agency said: “The water level is now under control and thanks to the installation of new venting units, the speed in which we can pump out water has been increased significantly.

“We are continuing to use three pumps to keep the water level under control”.
