Last Wednesday (3rd August), Matt Allsopp, James Ebdon, Kev Foster and Adam Holleyman from the Wightlink-LCM Systems Cycle Race Team competed in the 7th round of the Mountbatten Evening Circuit races in Portsmouth.

First up were Ebdon and Foster in the 3rd category race. With Ebdon only needing 5th place or above to secure his 2nd cat licence for next season, the pair made sure they covered any large breakaway attempts.

A lone rider attacked after 10 minutes of racing which worked perfectly for the team as it forced other teams to chase. The leader stayed away until the finish, Ebdon used his fast sprint to win the bunch sprint to take 2nd place on the night and secure his 2nd category licence for next season. Foster finished safely in the bunch to gain more points for his league placing.

Matt Allsopp and Adam Holleyman then raced in the elite race. The pace was fast from the gun and many riders were dropped from the bunch on the very first lap.

Thankfully Allsopp and Holleyman were at the front and in the action. After a break of 3 gained a lap, Allsopp came 6th in the bunch sprint to take 9th place and Holleyman finished closely behind for 14th place.

The action for the team continue on Sunday (7th August) when Wightlink LCM riders Russell Thomson and Dave Cooper entered the 4th category race at the 2nd Sotonia CC Summer Criterium, held at the South Winchester Park & Ride, to try and gain more points.

The race went hard from the gun; Cooper was caught out of position at the start and was soon chasing hard to get back in with the bunch.

Very quickly a 10-man breakaway formed with Thomson on board.

The pace remained high throughout the 45-minute race and came down to a bunch sprint for the leading group.

Thomson exited the final hairpin in fifth wheel but couldn’t hold it in the sprint, and crossed the line in 8th place. Cooper finished in 14th.
